When you type something into an AI chatbot, where does it go? Who can see it? Could it end up in the AI's training data? Could someone else's conversation include information you shared?
These are reasonable questions, and the answers are more clear than you might expect. This article explains what actually happens to your data when you use AI tools, what you can control, and what practical steps you should take.
What Happens When You Send a Message
When you type a prompt and hit send, your message travels to the AI company's servers. The AI model processes your input, generates a response, and sends it back to you. Your conversation is stored on the company's servers so you can access your chat history later.
That much is simple. The more important question is: what else happens with your conversations beyond showing them back to you?
The Training Data Question
This is the big one. Can AI companies use your conversations to train and improve their models?
The short answer: it depends on which tool you use and what settings you have chosen.
ChatGPT (OpenAI)
By default, your conversations on the free and paid consumer plans can be used to improve their models. You can opt out by going to Settings, then Data Controls, and turning off "Improve the model for everyone." Note that opting out also affects your chat history functionality. Business and Enterprise plans do not use conversations for training by default.
Claude (Anthropic)
As of late 2025, Anthropic asks consumer users (Free, Pro, and Max plans) whether they want to allow their conversations to be used for model training. If you opt in, conversations can be retained for up to five years. If you opt out, the standard retention period is 30 days. Business, Enterprise, and Education plans are excluded from training data use entirely. You can check and change your setting at claude.ai under Privacy Settings.
Google Gemini
Conversations are used to improve their models by default. You can opt out by turning off "Gemini Apps Activity," though doing so may limit some functionality. Conversations selected for human review before you opted out may be retained for up to three years, disconnected from your account. Workspace enterprise plans have separate, more protective data handling.
A 2025 Stanford study that analyzed the privacy policies of six major AI companies found that all of them use consumer conversations for model improvement in some form, though the opt-out mechanisms vary significantly in clarity and ease of use. The researchers noted that the documentation is often spread across multiple policy documents, making it difficult for users to understand their full rights.
If you care about your data not being used for training, check your settings now. Do not assume the default is private.
What About My Chat History?
All three major tools store your conversation history so you can go back and reference past chats. This data is stored on the company's servers, not just on your device.
Deleting a conversation removes it from your visible history. Whether it is fully removed from the company's systems depends on the provider. Most companies retain deleted data for some period for safety monitoring and legal compliance before fully purging it. Anthropic, for example, has stated that deleted conversations will not be used for future model training.
If you want a conversation to leave no trace at all, some tools offer temporary or incognito-style modes. Gemini offers "Temporary Chat," which does not appear in your history and is not used for training. Claude does not currently offer a similar mode, but conversations you delete are excluded from training use.
What You Should Not Put Into AI Tools
Regardless of your privacy settings, there are certain things you should avoid sharing with any AI chatbot on a consumer plan.
Passwords, API keys, or security credentials. This should be obvious, but people do it. Never paste sensitive authentication information into a chat.
Sensitive personal data. Social security numbers, credit card numbers, medical records with identifying information, or other data that could cause harm if exposed.
Confidential business information. Proprietary strategies, unreleased financial results, trade secrets, or internal communications that would be damaging if leaked. If your company has an AI use policy, follow it. If it does not, this is a good reason to suggest creating one.
Information about other people without their knowledge. Pasting in someone else's private communications, personal details, or sensitive information raises both privacy and ethical concerns.
The general rule is simple: do not put anything into a consumer AI tool that you would not be comfortable writing in an email to a colleague. If it would be a problem if someone else saw it, do not type it in.
Enterprise vs. Consumer: The Privacy Divide
There is a meaningful difference between consumer plans (the free and personal paid versions) and enterprise or business plans.
Enterprise and business plans from all three major providers typically include contractual commitments that your data will not be used for model training, shorter or configurable retention periods, compliance certifications, and in some cases, the option to run AI on your own infrastructure.
If your company handles sensitive data regularly and wants to use AI tools, the enterprise tier is worth the investment specifically for the data protections. The consumer versions are fine for personal use and non-sensitive work, but they are not designed for handling confidential business information.

Your Privacy Action Plan
Check your training data settings. Open each AI tool you use, go to settings or privacy controls, and verify whether your conversations are being used for model training. Change the setting if you prefer otherwise.
Set a personal policy for what you share. Decide in advance what types of information you will and will not put into AI tools. Having a clear rule saves you from making judgment calls in the moment.
Use separate tools for separate purposes. Some people use one AI tool for personal tasks (where privacy matters less) and a different one for work (where they are more careful about what they share). This simple separation reduces risk.
Delete conversations you no longer need. Regularly clearing your chat history reduces the amount of your data sitting on someone else's servers. This is especially important for conversations that touched on anything sensitive.
Stay informed as policies change. AI companies update their privacy policies. Anthropic's shift to opt-in training in late 2025 caught many users by surprise. Check your settings periodically, especially after major updates or terms-of-service changes.
The Bottom Line
AI tools are not inherently unsafe for your privacy, but they are not inherently safe either. They are services run by companies, and like any service, the level of privacy you get depends on the settings you choose and the information you share.
